Born in New Jersey, Wallace began his career in the music world in 1974, working as a chief engineer at his own studio in Los Angeles. Though he initially experienced moderate success, he returned to New York City in the early 1980s during the rise of hip-hop, a genre that would play a significant role in shaping his career.

Wallace first made waves in the industry in 1986 with his groundbreaking work on the Run-DMC–Aerosmith collaboration of “Walk This Way”, produced by Rick Rubin. His success continued as he worked with iconic acts like The Cult, Slayer, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Sepultura, and Sonic Youth, among many others.

One of his most notable contributions came with Nirvana’s legendary album “Nevermind”, where his mix of the record became an essential part of its success and influence. Wallace's distinct mixing style, known for its clarity and dynamic range, made him a go-to engineer for some of the most iconic bands and artists of the era, including Rage Against the Machine, Guns N' Roses, Linkin Park, Paul McCartney, and Jeff Buckley.

In 1999, Wallace earned a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for his work on Sheryl Crow’s album “The Globe Sessions”, alongside engineers Tchad Blake and Trina Shoemaker. This recognition cemented Wallace’s place in the upper echelons of music engineering.

As of May 2021, albums with credits from Andy Wallace have sold over 120 million units worldwide, with his work continuing to influence and inspire new generations of engineers and producers.
